Speculative Ground - Call for Submissions

Speculative Ground: Proposals on Paper

Emerging from our conviction that artists have valuable contributions to make to public policy-making, we seek artist-makers willing to engage imaginatively and critically with the Scottish Government’s Land-Use Strategy1. This particular policy, unique to Scotland, presents an opportunity to explore the relationships between creative practice, governance and land in its widest sense. Inspired by works such as Peter Liversidge's hand-typed Proposals, we invite creative and speculative proposals on paper – as works, as provocations, as means of engagement. These proposals will be exhibited in Edinburgh at the conference of the Association of Social Anthropologists (19th-22nd June), where this year's theme will be Anthropology and the Enlightenment. They will form part of a wider exhibition on land-use strategies.

Speculative Ground builds on interdisciplinary art-anthropology projects such as Ethnographic Terminalia, bringing art practice and anthropological investigations together, with the conference as the site of engagement. The exhibition, in-situ at the University of Edinburgh, will be open to members of the University, conference delegates, and the general public for the duration of the conference.

Format of Works and Timetable for Exhibition:
Proposals must be on or of paper and no greater than A3 in size. We welcome any medium within this format and encourage experimental responses to land use policy and strategies. All submissions will be uniformly mounted/framed by us. Proposals should be submitted by end of Wednesday 4th June 2014.

Physical proposals can be sent to: Harkness and Clarke, Speculative Ground Exhibition, Department of Anthropology, University of Aberdeen, AB24 3QY. Work is sent at your own risk, but costs of postage will be reimbursed, within reason.
Electronic submissions are also welcome (particularly from overseas) and can be sent to speculativeground[at]gmail[dot]com with any instructions for printing and presentation. For electronic submissions please ensure images are a minimum of 300dpi.

Please feel free to contact Jennifer Clarke and Rachel Harkness, at speculativeground[at]gmail[dot]com, with any questions.
