Another Result for Creetown

The people who wrote the Creative Scotland Corporate Plan consider public art to be 'under-developed in Scotland' ...this is certainly not the case in Creetown - less than 400 households and 5 significant public artworks in as many years. Adamson Square, Supernature (CNN 2008), Balloch Roundhouse, Triquetra ......and now unveiled (or adopted) today Alex Rigg's Creebaby

Creebaby is a 20 foot welded steel figure of a sitting child - it looks over the pond at Balloch Woods towards the road. Clematis and climbing roses have been planted at the bases and will be trained to cover the steel armature - a living version of Rigg's trademark willow figures that he makes in collaboration with Trevor Leat. There is a door at the back of the figure inviting the public to enter and view the world from the viewpoint of the sculpture.

Alex is a truly versatile artist and is equally well known for his dance and performance work with his company Oceanallover as his sculptural installations. His sculptural work always carries with it a performative aspect and an invitation to participate in spectacle - an attribute well suited to engaging the public in both the creation and the long term use of the work.

Creetown did everyone proud with a great spread and a party atmosphere at Balloch Woods today

Creetown Initiative have developed the Balloch Woods project and the associated public artworks under director Andrew Ward and the project manager for Creebaby Karen Donald. It is an inspiring example of the positive benefits of creativity and cultural projects in a small rural community - Andrew is not stopping here though he is already working on new projects...lets just hope Creative Scotland are taking note (they ought to be, as they match funded Creebaby and Triquetra as part of their Inspire fund)
